The Supercritical Phase

Water, known for its liquid, solid, and gaseous states, enters a fourth form under high-pressure and temperature: the supercritical phase. In this state, water exhibits unique properties that enable highly efficient waste conversion. This is the core of our technology: a continuous and highly efficient use of supercritical water.

Unlocking (problematic) Waste Streams

SuperCritical CleanUp processes various waste types, including wet industrial wet waste stream. Its ability to handle liquid waste with high water content sets it apart as a versatile solution for difficult waste streams. Besides the process can be used to fully destruct PFAS.

The Conversion Process

We mix water with organic waste and bring it into the supercritical phase, something special happens: all organic matter in the water breaks down into methane, hydrogen and clean water. As all the organic matter is completely converted, no digestate remains.

Green Circular Gas and Clean Water

The gas mixture produced by the gasifier can be upgraded into green methane, pure hydrogen, orsyngas, suitable as an industrial feedstock. Leveraging the high pressure from the supercritical phase, this gas can be directly injected into the high pressure grid, which connects to seasonal storages systems. Additionally, the clean water generated in the process can be reused internally or safely discharged into surface water systems.

Unrivaled Experience at Alkmaar

At the world's first industrial demonstration plant for supercritical water gasification, SCW Systems has spent years proving SuperCritical CleanUp under real operating conditions, over 3,000 operational hours, 3,000 tons of throughput, and a depth of hands-on experience unmatched in the field. This track record shows where SuperCritical CleanUp creates the most value, from industrial wet waste, green gas to complex wastewater and PFAS-containing streams.

Clean Circular Waste Management

By significantly reducing the CO₂ footprint of processing difficult wet waste streams, SuperCritical CleanUp provides an environmentally friendly method for creating green, circular gas and clean water.

Sustainable Energy Production

The produced gas can be seamlessly injected into existing high-pressure networks, serving as a drop-in replacement for natural gas or as an industrial feedstock, contributing to a cleaner energy future.

PFAS Destruction for Clean Water

Our innovative process rapidly and fully converts waste into useful substances and clean water, without organic digestate.

Scalable and
Future-Proof

The circular efficient conversion supports national energy transition goals, CO₂ reduction strategies, and compliance with environmental regulations, making it a reliable and future-ready solution for sustainable development.

Application areas

Industrial Circular Waste Treatment

Transforming wet industrial waste streams into valuable resources. Instead of incineration or landfill, SuperCritical CleanUp converts wet waste into a low-carbon drop-in natural gas and recoverable resources, closing the loop and turning a linear cost into a circular value stream.

Green Methane Production

Converts organic wet waste directly into green methane, a drop-in replacement for natural gas that can be fed straight into the existing gas grid. This displaces natural gas at the source, without the need for new infrastructure.

PFAS Destruction and Clean Water

Breaks down persistent PFAS compounds ("forever chemicals") at the molecular level, something conventional water treatment cannot achieve. Delivers clean, PFAS-free water while eliminating the contaminant entirely, rather than merely capturing or relocating it.

How SuperCritical CleanUp bends the carbon curve towards zero

Wet waste streams are difficult to treat efficiently, with incineration causing significant process emissions. SuperCritical CleanUp treats this waste with minimal emissions, producing a circular gas that acts as a drop-in replacement for natural gas. With the added benefit of using or storing the process CO₂, it achieves a triple impact: cutting emissions, replacing fossil fuels, and enabling negative emissions. Bending the carbon curve towards zero.

What We're Looking For
01

Recognizing the value of circular gas

We need policymakers, industry, and energy partners to recognize circular gas as a credible, scalable contributor to the energy mix. Not a niche solution, but a serious part of the transition.

02

Working together on local energy security

We need broader support for securing local energy production, reducing reliance on gas imports by unlocking the energy potential already present in domestic waste streams.

03

Partners with industrial waste streams

We're looking for partners with wet, industrial waste streams who want to move from a linear to a circular model, reducing their CO₂ footprint in the process. Our focus lies on streams that are largely soluble organic with limited inorganic content, while we work in parallel to unlock additional, more complex waste streams.
